ONE KC Local Update
“I therefore, a prisoner for the Lord, urge you to walk in a manner worthy of the calling to which you have been called, with all humility and gentleness, with patience, bearing with one another in love, eager to maintain the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace. There is one body and one Spirit—just as you were called to the one hope that belongs to your call— one Lord, one faith, one baptism, one God and Father of all, who is over all and through all and in all.” Ephesians 4:1-6
Paul prayed for unity among the body of believers in Ephesus. So too, we have been praying for unity among the body of believers in Kansas City.
Unity can be hard to find – especially in a diverse group of people with different backgrounds and experiences. Simply hearing the word division likely brings to mind a host of thoughts or memories. History is laced with disunity. Our nation is divided. Relationships are messy. Frankly, unity is hard to achieve. And yet, Paul prays for it. He urges it. He counsels the church to pursue “the unity of the Spirit.”
What is this unity of the Spirit that Paul urges? How can he be so hopeful that people can act with humility and gentleness together?
Dietrich Bonhoeffer grasped the reality that people can be unified, but only when they are – first and foremost – committed to a life in Christ. “[Jesus] stands between us and God, and for that very reason he stands between us and all other men and things. He is the Mediator, not only between God and man, but between man and man, between man and reality. Since the whole world was created through him and unto him (John 1:3; 1st Cor. 8:6; Heb. 1:2), he is the sole Mediator in the world.”
While we’ve often noted that Jesus is the mediator between us and the Father, have you ever considered that he is also the mediator between people?
Unity is the heartbeat behind ONE. We are praying that the Church of Kansas City acts as one body and one Spirit, together committed to one God and Father of all (Ephesians 4:5-6). And what better way to pursue unity than through the unifying Word of God?
Over the past year we have witnessed many answered prayers as we began introducing ONE to churches around the Kansas City metro. Today we celebrate nearly 150 churches and ministries rallying together around the gospels. Together, hundreds of believers in Kansas City will be studying the Word of God during Lent 2021.
